Crystal Beach is a 15-minute free drive on ferry ride from Galveston, and most of the time, a pod of dolphins will escort you both ways. Bring some popcorn to feed the birds on the way. Then it’s a 10-minute drive to The Edgewater, our home right on the beach, with panoramic views of the Gulf of Mexico. If this is your first visit, you will be greeted by your host.
If you're like most of our guests, you’ll have three experiences in succession: The first is the “Wow!” reaction as you step through the front door. The second is the “Ah” reaction as you lower your travel-weary body into a comfortable chair on our 600-square-foot deck. And the third is the “Oh, yes!” reaction as you sip a complimentary libation and watch the waves roll in, while the kids play with plenty of toys, games, boogie boards,& bikes.
Please Note: As a very family-oriented place, we do not rent to spring breakers, Prom, Graduation, wedding, or other large, potentially rambunctious, groups. In fact, the ideal match is two or three couples, with or without kids, who want a truly memorable beach vacation. The Edgewater offers the best of both worlds: A quiet, fully equipped beach front house, and the glories of Galveston, just half an hour away.
MORE ABOUT CRYSTAL BEACH
Crystal Beach has been called “Galveston’s best-kept secret.” But vacationers are begining to discover us. Many of our guests stay here both before and after a cruise. Four cruise lines call Galveston home: Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, and Celebrity (Check the Galveston Cruises Web site for expert advice and great rates.) And, during March and April, both the birds and the birders who take joy in spotting them arrive. Our federally protected wetlands and sanctuaries offer ideal resting places for migrating feathered friends.
TEXAS HOSPITALITY
We are proud Texans. But we are not Texans of the “all hat and no cattle” type. We and our neighbors are open, honest folk who thoroughly enjoy meeting and getting to know others, regardless of where they come from. Our guests always comment on the friendliness and eagerness to help of our native Texans. That is simply the way we are.
So when all those Californians flee the cold, rocky beaches of their own state’s shoreline, they are truly and pleasantly surprised (and welcomed) by the beaches and people they find at Crystal Beach. Snowbirds escaping the chill of a northern winter feel the same way. We also have a sense of humor. For example, the six-foot canvas palm tree that presides over our living room is nearly one-of-a-kind. Guests love posing beside it for pictures, many of which end up in our guest book, often with amusing captions.
From May 15 through September 15, The Edgewater rents by the week. That’s seven days and six nights. But that may not be enough, there’s so much to do.
A trip to Galveston, you will find the three pyramids of Moody Gardens: rain forest, aquarium, and “discovery.” Plus an IMAX theater. Also the Lone Star Flight Museum, great food and shopping in The Strand historic district, ship tours (submarine, destroyer escort, and square rigger), nine historic houses, and The Great Storm multimedia presentation of the 1900 hurricane the killed some 10,000 people.
You’ll love our beach, of course, but don’t miss one of the two Schlitterbahn water parks with a wave pool, mud-rider raft rides, and an uphill water coaster! The park even has an enclosed facility that’s open year round with a retractable roof.
SEAFOOD FANCIER'S PARADISE
As rosy-fingered dawn signals the start of a new day, you’ll see the shrimp boats headed out to sea. Then in late morning, you’ll hear a little bell signaling the arrival of “the fish lady” with her truck full of shrimp. Just pop downstairs and pick out your size, which you’ll grill in the spacious area under the house. Of course you can catch a mess of fish yourself, throw a line in from a bridge (or from the shore), or arrange to go deep-sea fishing.
With great seafood, a great beach, and so many things to do, Crystal Beach offers the quiet of a little fishing town and the attractions of a big city. No wonder so many guests book for the following year during their current stay.
Come join us and see for yourself!
